Outerwear

I’ll be on the 17-day RS Best of Italy tour May 5- 20. We go to Venice, the Dolomites, Cinque Terre, Florence, hill towns, and end in Rome. I can’t decide on outerwear. I have a lightweight cashmere cardigan that’s definitely coming. In addition to the sweater, should I bring 1) a midweight fleece jacket and a rain shell or 2) a lightweight insulated jacket (not down and rain resistant)? I know layers give you options, but will it be a hassle juggling three different pieces of outerwear? I’m worried about being cold while out at night.

You are in three different climate zones in a transitional season. I would go with option 1 as you can use the shell as a windbreaker or a rain shell no matter the temp. The insulated jacket will be a burden from Florence down south. As an alternative, look at a light weight down jacket (600-800 fill power). This jacket will get you down to about 45 degrees F on their own and compact super small.

I take a packable down jacket, which rolls into a 6" sack, and a packable knee length rain coat, ( with hood), also which rolls into a small sack. Literally, that has me covered. Do plan for rain, altho I've found umbrellas useless, as the wind turns them inside out. Many hotels do supply umbrellas. Have a great trip!

Is the rain shell waterproof? If yes, I vote #1.

I am cold tolerant and could probably manage with the rain shell and the cashmere cardie, though.

Thank you! Yes, the rain shell is waterproof. Now I think I will swap out my fleece for my lightweight down jacket that I bought when I used to backpack.
