Outdoor/Nature in January?

Other than Venice, are there any nature/outdoor areas that are beautiful in winter? Originally I'd planned the Lake Como area but now our dates may be changing to Dec/Jan and I know most villas are closed. Are there any recommended areas for this time of year?

The Dolomites are gorgeous in winter and not only for skiers. We have done some light winter hiking in the Alpe di Siusi and the Val Gardena. You can ride the lifts with the skiers if only for the views. Starting Dec 8 there are Christmas markets and charming decorations everywhere.

The two weeks starting at Christmas are very expensive as there are so many Italians taking holiday ski trips. Most hotels offer half-pension, i.e., breakfast and dinner included, which is fun.

I spent a few days on the Amalfi Coast in mid-February. The down sides in winter: the ferries don't operate and you could get poor weather, days are short. Up sides: there's very little traffic on the road, few tourists, most buses I saw had lots of empty seats, low season prices. It's entirely possible to drive there. Caveat: if you are going in the year-end holiday period, probably none of the up sides apply.

Sicily?
