Our “Assume You’ll Return” Trip

We are planning our second “assume you’ll return” trip to Italy, having spent a wonderful time there 2 years ago, but not seeing everything that we wanted. So, now we are going back to see the places we had to eliminate from our itinerary last time: Florence, Cinque Terre and Venice. I’ve poured over Rick’s book and this message board, and researched the travel time/distance between these places.

I need some advice for travel between Cinque Terre and Venice. Rather than take the long train ride between those areas (which is 6-7 hours, right?) we would like to spend a day or two seeing something along the way. If we only have a couple of days/nights, are we better off to consider Padua, Vicenza or Verona? We’d also like to see Lake Como/Varenna area but am a little worried about that being too far out of the way and how much time that would add to our itinerary. Or are there other ideas I’m not considering? We are art and history lovers but we like to break up our visits to cities rich in these things with relaxing, nothing-to-do-except-wander-and-enjoy places. I would really appreciate any advice and opinions – thanks !

If you are interested in those three, then just do those three. That itinerary makes for a great trip.

Suggest you fly into Venice, then travel to Florence, then end in the CT. for the return flight you could try to use either Pisa (PSA), Genova (GOA) or maybe Malpensa (MXP)

Florence makes a good stop between Venice and the CT. It is about 2 hour from Venice to Florence and then about 3 hours to Vernazza from Florence.

Of the three towns you mentioned, we much preferred Verona. Varenna is wonderful, of course, and I really think it wouldn't take that much longer to get there. Even two nights with a day in between would give you a great taste of that area. It might depend on the time of year you're traveling, also.

We really liked Verona and it's well positioned to break up the trip to Venice.

Vicenza may be too close to Venice to work for breaking up an otherwise very long leg.

We drove from Venice to CT a few years ago and stopped at Verona. We really liked it. Also, Verona's not far from Lake Garda which is definitely worth a visit if you have the time. Chalk up another vote for Verona.
