It is my understanding that SANDY beaches are few and far between in Italy. I've also heard that the sand beaches on the Adriatic side (Rimini?) are swamped with people. We will be in Italy next May and traveling from Rome and north of Rome, but could go to either the east or west coast. Can anyone recommend a nice sandy beach, and possibly picturesque uncrowded town? (Sounds like the perfect spot, doesn't it?)
Hi Cindy,
I know you mentioned beaches besides CT. However, Monterosso has a beautiful beach. It's huge and the water there is absolutely beautiful. I personally thought the beach there was more beautiful than the ones I saw on the Amalfi Coast.
CT is just a great place and won't be as crowded as other places in Italy.
That's the only place I know of but I'm sure there could be others near CT.
Have a great trip!
In May the beaches won't be too packed. Heck some won't even be open in May. I've been to the beaches south of CT (Marina di Massa and a bit north of Livorno). They are very nice and sandy, but not scenic natural beauty. I think there are very few beaches like that in Italy.
Haven't been there, but for ten years I've kept a photo from a Regione Marche brochure; try http://www.le-marche.com/Marche/html/conero.htm#portonovo. One caveat on places only reachable by boat: often the boats don't start running until mid June.
I have a friend from Italy and she said she vacations in Sardinia- she said it has white sandy beaches. I haven't been there but definitely will check it out during our next trip.
Good luck!!
I have been searching for beach as well. We are headed to CT, and will let you know after we get back, but if you have the time, check this out on Sardinia: Hotel - Pozzo Sacro. good luck!
Hi Cindy,
Here is another site to visit for info:

:)
Since you're looking for a beach NORTH of Rome, it's in Cinque Terre, but I thought the beach in Vernazza was nice. It's smaller than Monterosso, but the sand is great. (I was physically there this May, and mentally, I'm still there). The water was a little cold, but like everywhere else, you get used to it. It wasn't crowded either.
If you decide to go South of Rome, a small town called Atrani on the Amalfi Coast also has a nice sandy beach for no charge.
