I have 1 free day in Rome. Would like to see Ostia, some catacombs, and the Appian Way via public transportation. What is the best way to do this? I do not yet know where I will be staying in Rome.

Leave early morning, go to Pyramid train station, 30 minutes train ride, 15 minutes walk to Ostia. Under 2 euros for the train.
Then on your way back, stop at the garbatella train station, the one before pyramid i believe and the walk to san callisto catacombs and others will be about 35 minutes

Afraid I can't answer, but I'll be interested in the responses, because we also have one free day in Rome after our RS tour and are weighing some of the same options. We're staying near Spanish Steps.
