Ostia Beaches

We are going to take a day trip from Rome to visit Ostia Antica the first week in August. We have 3 kids ages 16, 14 and 10. Is it worth continuing on to locate the beaches? If so, what would you recommend?

It's absolutely worth it to continue on to the Ostia Lido beaches, especially with kids. We were just there and were pleasantly surprised. Be sure that they shower off after being in the water, though, as it's not considered the cleanest water you'll find. There are showers on the public beaches for 1 or 2 euro. Or you could consider one of the many private beaches that provide varying levels of amenities depending on what you want to pay. The "private" part doesn't refer to where the beach hits the water, just to the part where you'll see all the umbrellas and chairs, starting about 20 yards from the water. Anyone can walk along the shoreline. Be warned though, that the Ostia beach is VERY popular with Romans during August, so it will likely be packed with people. Take the train on from Ostia Antica Scavi to Ostia-Lido train in the direction of Cristoforo Colombo. The Colombo stop gets you the closest to the beach. Check it out on Google maps.
