Ostia Antica from FCO

We are flying out of Rome- early am flight- so have already made the decision to stay at Hilton Rome Airport. We plan to check in there early afternoon then go to FCO to get our COVID test needed for flight.
We’d like to then head to Ostia Antica for a few hours late afternoon til closing and return to our airport hotel afterwards.

What is best way to do this?
Taxi? looks like that might cost a bit- I am seeing 45-50 euros each way. Yikes.

The bus info I have found indicates train back into Rome-Ostiense then transfer to another, etc- taking 1.5 hours?
Is that really the only way to get there using public transportation?

Would taxis be readily available for our return to hotel?

Thanks

How are you getting to FCO? We stopped at the Hilton, checked in and put our bags in the room. Then, in our rental car, we visited Ostia Antica and returned our rental car after we returned to the FCO Hilton. Ostia Antica was very close to FCO. Have you contacted the Hilton asking for driver costs from OA?

Thanks Suki- no car- we will take a cab from Trastevere to Hilton.
I have emailed the hotel, waiting for response.

Getting to Ostia is easy, quick and cheap by public transportation from Rome city center. So a slightly faster option could be to take Leonardo express back into Rome (I think 10 euro). Then the metro (line B) and get off at Piramide. Then the commuter train to Ostia Antica. . It is a 10-minute walk away. It costs under 2 euro.

You could also try BOLT or UBER

I did consider that but Leonardo Express is 14 euros each way per person
That’s 56 euros for the 2 of us plus the other metro/trains and the amount of time it takes

Not familiar with BOLT and we don’t use UBER so a regular taxi might be our best choice, just not sure we want to spend quite so much
Frustrating because OA is so close the FCO!

I'm not sure why you don't use UBER, but BOLT is similar and supposedly pays the drivers better. When I looked at it, it was cheaper than UBER. Plus when I downloaded the BOLT app, I got an offer for a 30% discount. I typically find UBER cheaper than a cab. You could just input the info in the app and see what the cost would be. I would pick a similar time of day.

I believe the leonardo and then the other transportation would take an hour vs. 1 1/2 for the bus. I think the metro/train is about 2 euro.

It is fairly close to the airport. So either the bus or taxi. I don't think the taxi would be 45 E because the is the rate to central Rome. I would find the TI at the airport and they will direct you.

If you’re staying in Trastevere, can you store your bags at the hotel, visit OA, return to the hotel and head to FCO? Just checked the taxi fare finder site and the fare from FCO is €20.47

jules- UBER doesn't operate the same in Rome as elsewhere- it is only Uber Black as far as I know and actually more expensive than a regular cab. Their fixed rate from FCO to Rome center is 60 euros whereas regular cab is 48 euros

tdw- thank you! this is exactly what I was looking for

Frank- every taxi fare finder I have checked says 34 euros or more- I was researching this late last night and got my rate wrong in my original post- amazing to me that it is still pretty expensive for about a 15-20 min ride

Philip- we need to get our test done and testing at airport closes at 4- I don't think leaving bags at Trastevere hotel helps us since we're staying at airport Hilton anyway- although could work if we go early in am- still that is twice back and forth to FCO

Just trying to make some purpose out of this last day.

Taxifarefinder doesn't seem a reliable source:
1. the 10% tip suggested on that site is ridiculous. Italians do not tip and even if they did, taxi drivers would come after muggers, lawyers and arsonists in the line of people who would like to be paid more for no reason. Why should I tip the guy that owns both the car and the license? Because the taxi fares in Rome are among the higher in Europe while the number of cabs is the lowest?
2. Inside Rome you'd pay around € 15 for a similar distance. Even if you add € 5 because the starting point is at FCO, € 34 is too much.

Thanks Dario
I think 20 euros from the hotel sounds reasonable enough and we don’t tip

Do you think taxis would be readily available outside Ostia Antica for our return? Or would we need to call?

It would seem the bus would be the worst option since both places I checked and where the OP checked its 1.5 hours. I'm glad you found that the taxi would work. We were at Ostia on a weekday at the end of October. It was very quiet there, few visitors, and there were no taxis sitting by the entrance when we came and when we left. If it were me, I think I would contact Ostia and ask them about the availability of taxis at the end of the day. I'm sure they'd have suggestions. Also, there is a chance they might have other options to suggest for transportation to and from FCO.

I'd bring a hat and water bottle. However, it is cooler and more comfortable at Ostia than at Pompeii.

However you decide to get there you must visit OA. We enjoyed it very
much.

We'll get there! We are very much looking forward to the visit and happy I could figure a way to make this work, hate that we need to spend last nite at airport hotel and spend time getting tested but with this visit to OA it's much more acceptable!
This will be Thur 9/30- and I never go anywhere without a hat and water ;) As long as it's not raining we'll be fine- it was pouring rain on the day we visited Pompeii- at least it was rain, not lava lol

Thanks again everyone, obviously I needed a forum to figure this out. If I'd only checked cab fare from hotel not FCO I might not have had to ask- but hopefully this thread will help others in the future as well.
