Suggestions for a guide when visiting Ostia Antica in May?
We used the free RS audio tour when we went.
It seemed to cover all the points of interest.
we were happy walking around reading the signs, so I can't help - sorry
We used a guide book, no guide necessary.
Agree that Rick’s tour covers the main points of interest. Wikipedia has very thorough coverage of the site, it’s history, etc. that will provide a lot of the background info you need. Google Ostia Antica and you will find a number of websites providing information. When I visited the site we were provided with a map of the site on entry which was useful. There is a bookstore/gift shop (hopefully open again). Look at the website Ostia-Harbour City of Ancient Rome. There is a nice fly through video of the site which will give you an idea of what you will see.
Unlike Pompeii where guides were hanging out by the entrance, we did not see that at OA. If you want a guide my guess is that you would have to arrange for a guide in advance. It is an interesting site and it is fairly well documented with signs.
Be sure to visit The Mithraeum of the Baths of Mithras. Oddly, Rick makes no mention of this in his Rome guide book we used.
Thank you all!
