I'm planning a short (4 or 5-day) trip with my 14-year-old grandson to Italy. He is a fan of ancient Roman history, and is already in his second year of studying Latin. He would like to spend his time in Italy visiting ancient sites, and has less interest in the modern or medieval aspects of Rome. I'm very familiar with Rome and would rather avoid heavy tourist crowds this trip.
Would it make sense to make Ostia Antica our base camp, thoroughly explore the ruins there, and do day-trips via Metro to the ancient sites in Rome? Staying in OA, so close to Fiumicino, would also seem to simplify arrival and departure days. Can anyone recommend lodging in Ostia Antica?
Thanks.
