It seems that the ruins of Ostia Antica would be easy to get to by taxi/hopefully not to costly from Rome Fiumicino airport.
Rather than going the route suggested in guidebk from Rome metro. Has anyone done this? had good/bad results? your
experiences when visiting Ostia Antica. Thx in advance. J
I can't help with directions since I went from Termini, but I did enjoy visiting Ostia. I used Rick's free audio guide.
I went from Termini last July. I used Ricks book and really enjoyed myself. I went early and was practically alone. By the time I left crowds were coming and it was really getting hot. Highly recommend it.
You probably would have to do it via taxi from the airport. The concern I would have is getting back. It is not a popular site and when we were there I did not see a taxi stand. Perhaps someone in the ticket office could call a taxi for you or maybe you can prearrange a pick up time.
It is far easier to see and comfortable because a lot of shade trees than Pompeii. We found it very interesting.
Can you give a little more context as to what you're trying to do? Do you have a long layover at FCO? Or are you going into Rome from FCO and you want to hit OA on the way? If the latter, you should be aware that there is no left luggage facility at OA. Also, you might be surprised at the cost of a taxi since the taxi driver won't be able to pick up a return fare from OA back to FCO. For those reasons, most people do OA as an easy daytrip from Rome.
The site itself is very interesting. It's roughly the same size as Pompeii, but without the crowds or the volcano drama. And it's a lot greener. One tip that I wish I had read before we went is to walk all the way to the far end when you arrive, then work your way back. The most interesting parts of the ruins are at the far end. You don't want to run out of time by lingering too long at the stuff nearer the entrance.
