If this is your first time to Rome and you only have two days, I would NOT recommend taking the time to go to Ostia (and I love Ostia). Spend it in Rome. Happy travels.

I would consider it only if you wanted a break from the big city. It is pleasant and peaceful. Somewhat comparable to Pompeii but not equal to in any way. It was buried in mud over time and not ash.

If this is your first trip I wouldn't spend a minute of it outside the city. 2 days will hardly give you time to scratch the surface of Rome and all it has to offer. Donna

When you only have 2 days in Rome, a half day side trip outside the city probably isn't the best use of your time.

Janet, there are plenty of archeological sites in the city of Rome. You could spend a half day at the Forum and Colosseum instead of trying to get to Ostia. I've done the Amalfi Coast trip many times, always worth it.

There is so much to see in Roma that, IMHO, you should stay there and see what you can. We were in Ostia Antica last month and we visited Pompeii two years ago. Ostia has everything Pompeii has except the famous history. However, Ostia has two amenities missing in Pompeii: 1. shade and 2. a sea breeze. You can save either destination for the next trip. Buon viaggio,

I think everyone's in agreement that your time is too short to take in Ostia although it's a beautiful place to visit. How long do you have planned for Amalfi? Maybe you could do a short stop in Pompeii on the way.
