Ostia and FCO airport

I'll be finishing a tour in Rome next fall and staying a few extra days. My flight home will be early in the morning, and I plan to spend the preceding night at or near the airport. I also want to visit Ostia Antica on this trip, and I'm thinking of going there the day before my flight, then on to the airport without returning to Rome. I won't have a car.

I'm looking for info or experiences to see how feasible this is. I understand that there's no luggage storage at the Ostia site, so I expect I'll have to take the train from Termini to FCO and leave my bags at the hotel, then get to Ostia -- by bus? taxi? return train to Piramide and then out to FCO from there? (Could I store bags at Piramide or the train station next door?)

If I can't combine a visit to Ostia with my trip to the airport, I'll probably go there as a separate day trip. But I hate to backtrack all the way into Rome when Ostia and FCO are so close together. And I'll have no trouble making the flight out since I'll be at an airport hotel that night. Any insights?

Was just in Rome, you are correct. Ostia is very close to the airport. Found that when we were booking our hotel room near the airport for our early morning flight, that many of the hotels had free transport to Ostia. We couldn't make use of it as we got to our hotel after dark.

Take note, Ostia Antica is closed on Mondays.

We went out to Ostia Lido late one afternoon, checked into a hotel, visited Ostia Antica by public transportation the next day, and our hotel arranged a shuttle to the airport for the following morning (i.e., two nights in the hotel). That obviated the storing luggage problem and we were handy to the airport for a morning flight.

Great info, thanks! I'm hoping to do the same thing this October on my way home from Florence/Rome.
