Is Ostia a nice place to hang out for a few days prior to visiting other areas of Italy? We'd like to ease out of jet lag and aren't really interested in Rome. If so, what area of town is quiet but easily accessible to restaurants?
I can't vouch for it yet, but we're staying in Ostia Lido in October for a couple of nights which will include a visit to Ostia Antica for the day. From the bit of research we've done we think it will be interesting for some lazy days as we get over jetlag. From there were heading to Tivoli for three nights before moving on. Our goal this trip was to avoid Rome except for the train station.

Where are you going right after it? And will you have a car?
We often begin--and sometimes end-- our Italian vacations with a stay in Fiumicino town which I find to be perfect...easy to walk to the sea and to many restaurants, lots of local life in the town, great food, and many appealing hotels...just a quick taxi ride from the airport. We love one particular restaurant there, Pascucci, but there are many others, including Clementina for excellent pizza....right on the Tiber canal... (Note that in Pascucci you do not have to take the tasting menu..)
