Orvieto vs. Montefalco

First time in Italy from US. Have already been in Cinque Terre, Florence, Castellina in Chianti and Assisi.

Driving from Assisi to Rome in October. Our first plan was to stop in Orvieto. But a friend suggested Montefalco & Spoleto to see the Ponte del Torre then possibly to Greccio to see Creche museum. We are really interested in seeing the Ponte del Torre. It is a bit of back tracking to see both Orvieto and the Ponte del Torre - is it worth the drive or would we get a similar experience in Montefalco.

Any recommendations?

You could stop in Spoleto to see the Ponte delle Torri on your way to Orvieto. There would be minimal back-tracking. Montefalco is very small, which means there's much more to do and see in Orvieto. The 2 towns are both nice, but imo the experience wouldn't be similar. If you want to see both the bridge and the museum, then it might be better to stay in Montefalco and visit both on your way to Rome. There's no right or wrong answer here. It all depends on your interests.

Hi,
Orvieto is wonderful. We live in Aiken, SC and Orvieto is our sister city. So we became familiar with Orvieto through various functions and friends here. When we made our first trip to Italy we naturally went to Orvieto. It was great. If you are interested in Italian history and specifically Eutruscan history you will find it fascinating. If you have researched Orvieto at all you will know that it is a fortress city high on a hill overlooking beautiful valleys. There is a very interesting underground. The Duomo and piazza is great. Food and lodging was wonderful too! We weren't disappointed in anything.

Orvieto has considerably more actual go-inside attractions than most places its size.
