I'm trying to decide whether to stay in Orvieto for two nights or Hotel Romantica Pucci, in Bagnoregio for two nights. Any opinions?
This was be no contest for me. Orvieto is a much better place. You might enjoy a half-day visit to Civita di Bagnoregio (enchanting place and the only part of Bagnoregio I found of interest), but spend most of your time in Orvieto. More to see, better eating, better strolling, and a duomo worth walking through more than once! I love Orvieto!
My vote goes to Orvieto. It is a little difficult w/o a car to get to Civita d Bag. It is interesting to look at(setting& history) but very small you could walk around in 30 min.
We have heard La Badia in Orvieto is fabulous to eat and stay. We plan to eat dinner there one night as we are staying 5 nights in Arezzo.
I would vote for Orvieto. But I would say it is not that hard to get to Civita. We easily took a bus from the Piazza in the upper part of town 50 minutes to Bagnoregio. From there you can either walk to Civita or take a shuttle bus to the bottom of the ramp uphill. We had bruschetta at one of the places that Rick recommends. They did it right over an open fire with great olive oil and salt.
Melva,
My suggestion would also be to stay in Orvieto. There's lots there to see for two days, but you could take a day trip to Civita di Bagnoregio if desired.
Another vote for Orvieto.
Don't miss Civita de Bagnoregio! It is such a unique town. It is tiny but beautiful. It was one of my favorite visits while in the area. It would stay is Orvieto and take a half day trip to Civita. We also had the bruchetta at the restaurant recommended by Steve...it was ok, I would probably try the other restaurant next time.
