I understand there is an interesting underground in Orvieto.....but how does one see it? Anyone been on a tour?
I did not take the tour, but you can get tickets from the Tourist Information office located in the same square as the Duomo. I toured the Etruscan Museum instead. The tour members who did the underground tour found it very interesting. No advance tickets were needed. Not all tours are in English, however.
Check out www.orvietounderground.it and click on 'info'. Looks really interesting!
I was told at the Tourist Office that it could be a problem for people with claustrophobia.
Mary,
Yes, I've been on that tour. As I recall I bought tickets at the T.I. and then the group met with the guide out front, and walked to the entrance, which is only a short distance. The history of the underground is very interesting (especially the bit about the pigeon coops), and I felt the tour was worthwhile.
I'm not really claustrophobic, but didn't find the caves to be particularly small. I know some people have a problem with that, and saw a good example of that on a visit to Portland. As I was boarding the USS Blueback for a tour (moored at OMSI), I had to move over as a woman came running up the gangway screaming "I can't do this"!
I enjoyed the tour. The guide was extremely interesting and I learned a lot. I vaguely remember having to sign up at the office for a specific tour, the numbers are limited.
Underneath the city, there are miles and miles of tunnels and other opportunities to see different ones. I also visited Pozzo della Cava, a private site. . . different, also interesting.
I also did the tour and found it to be worthwhile and interesting. As others have said, we purchased the tickets somewhere in the main square and met the guide outside. There were one or two areas that required bending down and crouching to get into a space but it wasn't bad.
Tour is great. You can buy your tickets at the office in the Duomo square. As you face AWAY from the church, look to your left, it's the last door in the line of buildings. There are English language tours every hour. Tickets (if I remember correctly) were about 5E each?
You will meet in the park just by the wall and the guide will unlock the gate and take your group on the tour.
Tour took about an hour. Very interesting information about the underground tunnels and how they were and are used.
The guide will take you through several rooms/tunnels and explain how they were created. You will see stairs up to the buildings above and all the dove cotes....
There is plenty of light, and the rooms you visit are quite large...there will be a few stairs and some uneven ground, but nothing challenging.
It is a very interesting tour and not claustrophobic. You can purchase tickets at the Tourist office near the Cathedral.
