Orvieto Undergound & Carta Unica

Does one need to pre-book a tour for the Orvieto Underground? The RS implies yes, but there is nothing about it on their website. Also, has anyone taken this tour and what did they think of it? Is it included in the CartaUnica? Once again the RS books says yes, but the Underground website doesn't mention the card.

Also, the Carta Unica website mentions "The card also includes a number of services such as guided tours at certain times". Does anyone know anymore about this? What tours? What services?

Thanks!

We didn't pre book. We went to the TI and bought tickets after arriving, then visited the Duomo until it was time to meet up for the tour. It was late October, so it may be different in high season.

It seems there are multiple underground tours. I'm not sure if there are better choices than the one we took.

We didn't use the Carta Unica so I can't help you with that.

Laura,

I wouldn't bother pre-booking the Orvieto tour. It's easy enough just to buy tickets at the T.I. across from the Duomo, which is where you'll meet your Guide when the tour starts.

I quite enjoyed the tour and found the history of the "underground" quite interesting (especially the reasons why the chose to raise Pigeons underground).

While in Orvieto, I'd also suggest a visit to St. Patrick's Well, which is to the right when you exit the Funicular station. Considering when this was built, the engineering was brilliant!

A visit to the Duomo is also highly recommended, especially the small room with the ceiling Frescoes off to the right of the Altar.

I don't have any information on the Carta Unica so can't offer any advice on that. Hopefully someone here has that information?

Finally, if you have the time (and the budget) you might try Ristorante L'Antica Rupe in Orvieto. IMO the food was excellent. As I recall, the restaurant was accessed via some stairs from street level.

Happy travels!
