Orvieto Sep ‘25: Fly into Florence vs. Rome

Greetings, fellow travelers!

I will be in Orvieto from 14 - 20 September for an art class. Looking at the official Jubilee schedule, I see events planned from mid-month through the end.

To avoid the crowds in Rome, I’m considering flying into Florence instead. The train into Orvieto would take about an hour longer based on published schedules, but I think I would enjoy looking at the Italian countryside by train.

Any advice welcome!

If you are going directly to Orvieto, choose the most economical route and most convenient. If you are going to visit art museums, definitely Florence!

You should make that decision exclusively based on the convenience of your flights, travel itinerary, etc. and not on crowds. Florence will have crowds too. If flying to Florence is just as convenient for you, you can do so. Just be aware that:
1. Rome Fiumicino (FCO) is Italy's largest airport, therefore there will be more flight options to FCO.
2. Because of no. 1, flying to FCO is generally less expensive than flying to Florence (FLR).
3. Florence is a smaller airport that handles only European flights, therefore you won't be able to fly to FLR directly from another continent, you will need to connect through a European gateway which has flights to FLR, such as Frankfurt, Paris CDG, Munich, Zurich, Amsterdam, etc.

We are going to Tuscany and Umbria in late April and have a direct flight from Atlanta to Rome. Our tour starts in Siena. If we flew into Florence, it would involve a change of flights and more delay.

We will take the train to Siena from Rome, no problem.

Orvieto is closer to Rome and I suggest flying into Rome.
