Trying to decide . . . while in Rome should we do a day trip to Orvieto or Tivoli? We love both Italian villages and gardens. I can't make up my mind.
Can't comment on Tivoli because we've never been there but we visited Orvieto last September & LOVED it. There are a variety of things to do there but best of all, I just really loved walking around when the town was quiet during the afternoon siesta and taking in the quaintness of the town. The Duomo is stunningly beautiful and I would recommend the underground tour as well (it's only an hour & very interesting). You probably can't go wrong whichever town you choose but I don't think Orvieto would disappoint.
Your question is like trying to decide between linguine and white clam sauce or buccatini al' Amatriciano. They are both good choices and will satisfy.
Tivoli is a little closer and it is near Hadrian's Villa. You could easily visit both in one day.
Orvieto is nice and interesting, as well. Two years ago I spent 3 nights there just hanging out.
Tivoli has fountains and Orvieto has the funicular. You cannot go wrong with either choice.
Buon viaggio,
