Orvieto or Sorrento

Have an extra day in Rome before heading to Venice. For a day trip staying one night. Which place would be best to visit on the short amount of time? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Orvieto. Closer to Rome, (1.4 hours to Orvieto, 4 to Sorrento) easier to get to -- more to really see. Sorrento is more like southern CA. Orvieto has St Patrick's well, the most beautiful church, ceramics, great places to eat, and it's a wonderful town to just "chill out" in.

I haven't been to Orvieto, and I love the Sorrento area. But, given how little time you have, and the fact that Sorrento is the complete opposite direction, I would choose Orvieto.

I don't know how much time you have in Rome or how you're getting to Venice, but you might want to consider just spending the extra day in Rome.

We were disappointed with our last visit to Sorrento--we had to dodge lots of "buzzy" Vespas--it just wasn't a relaxing destination. We really loved Orvieto on the other hand--we ate memorable meals, learned about dunking our biscotti in Vin Santo, toured Etruscan ruins, and visited the Duomo. It's a small city with great views and lots of nice walks. We stayed at the Hotel Corso.

We loved Orvieto and also stayed at Hotel Corso. Very convenient to the funicular. No need for a taxi or shuttle. We had a fabulous meal at I Sette Consoli.

I love both but for an easy short visit- Orvieto. It was the surprise of this year's trip. Getting to Sorrento is alot more work. We stayed at RS's Magnolia. Perfect location and the best shower on our trip. Ask for a room in the back with the frescoed ceiling at only 65 euros. Nice for a glass of wine and people watch and one minute to the Cathedral or Farmers Market (if it's the right day). Also really enjoyed Ostia Antica, the ancient port of Rome, even more than Pompeii and so easy.

Thank you all so much for the great advice. I think we will go to Orvieto and leave Sorrento for another trip.

One more vote for Orvieto, given your situation. Orvieto is on your way and spectacular. Heading to Sorrento would wipe you out for the long trip the next day.

Sorrento is wonderful but too far for only 1 day.Leave Sorrento for next time and allow min 4 days for Sorrento and surrounding area. Orvieto is great too but in a diff way and one day works well.
