Orvieto on way to Siena from Rome

We will be leaving Rome on a Sunday in May. We would like to stop in Orvieto, spend a few hours on our way to our agritourismo in Siena. Is it ok to leave luggage in the car? Do you think we would also have time to check out Civita?

Civita is just about 13 miles up the road from Orvieto. We rode our bike there several years ago.

You go through the new town to the old town. It's cute, and will take maybe an hour to see everything there.

Parking is just below the land bridge, and you walk to Civita from there - 2-3 minutes.

As always in Europe, make sure your luggage is out of sight, as well as other items in your car that help thieves recognize a tourist's car! No maps on the seats...nothing left in plain sight.

Orvieto is one of my favorite hill tops towns. I was just there in November. A few hours here is fine. Walk down St Patrick's well for fun, walk around the wall for great views, and visit the duomo. The outside is much more impressive than the inside, but it's a beautiful church...no scaffolding on it now!

It will be fine if it's in a trunk. Orvieto is small enough to be relatively safe and you are outside the major tourist season, so it's better here than elsewhere in Italy but not completely worry free.
