Hi, spending one night along train line from La Spezia to Rome. Looking at Orvieto. Any input or suggestions welcome.
There are direct fast trains from La Spezia to Rome
3.5-4 hours
No need to go past Orvieto unless you want to, will require changes
Anyway I would stay UP in Orvieto not near train station
Take the funicular then bus
Hotel Duomo is right near Duomo

Stay in the town not by the train station. Orvieto is a wonderful town. I've stayed there many times.
The problem with Orvieto is you need to take the slow train to get there from Rome. Staying in Orvieto is fine - it's a great little town for an overnight stay - but staying there is a decision to spend the time and stay there rather than go onto Florence which you could do in less time on the fast train.
If you really want to stay before La Spezia either Florence or Pisa are places to stay that are on the way to La Spezia.
If you do stay in Orvieto stay in the town proper on top of the hill not near the train station is that is in "Orvieto Scalo" the new part of town. Walk out of the train station and take the funicular up to the top of the hill and old town.
Whatever you decide have a great trip,

Thank you, we are traveling from CT down to Rome for a flight on the following day. Wanted to avoid being in Rome for one night.
You need to be in Rome or near the airport the night before your flight
Staying in Orvieto is far too risky
Slow train to Termini then LE or taxi so you would have to leave Orvieto at least 6 hours before flight (3 to FCO + 3 hours preflight)
Some folks like to stay in Fiumicino for that last night- find a hotel with an airport shuttle or take a taxi
Another option is the Airport Hilton-expensive but super convenient with moving walkways right
in to the terminal
Honestly if you get an early start you can be in Rome by noon or so
That’s a decent half day and evening
Head to airport in the am either by taxi or LE (our preference is always taxi-door to door fixed rate 55 euros)
Take a look at Grosseto. It's about midway between La Spezia and Rome.
Scroll down on this link to the write up by frequent poster Jean from Idaho on Grosseto. It sounds lovely.
Where would you go for a day trip
There is an early morning bus to the airport in just over 2 hours as well as trains through Rome Termini station.
Given that I would also vote for going all the way to Rome before your flight and being there the night before. This is the safest way to handle potentially missing an international flight.
If you wanted to stay outside Rome some people choose the beach areas like Ostia or Fiumicino which is actually closer to the airport than Rome proper. I believe some places even have shuttles or other airport transfers.
I know having to stay somewhere for the last night before a flight feels like a bit of a wasted night but it is the sensible thing to do.
Have a great trip whatever you decide,

Another vote for staying in Rome or at or near the airport the night before a flight.
Train services in Italy tend to have strikes in peak tourist seasons ( ask me how I know) .
If you can’t afford to buy new plane tickets if you miss a flight, then stay nearby.
Flight to Montenegro is at 4pm from Rome; would you still recommend staying by airport night b4?
I would be in Rome night before and at the airport 3 hours prior (non Schengen)
