Orvieto in May??

My husband and I are will be taking the train from Siena to Rome in May to catch a cruise after having spent three days in Florence and a week with a car in the Tuscany region. We would like to stop somewhere on the way to Rome and were thinking Orvieto. Is Orvieto a good choice? Does the train take you right into Orvieto? Any suggestions for modest accommodations and good restaurants?

Orvieto is lovely, and the train will take you to the funicular that goes to the old town. Then you can pick up a local bus to get to the cathedral, etc. I did it as a day trip from Rome, so I can't comment on accomidations.

My Uncle and Aunt stayed at Hotel Duomo. It located right next to the Duomo in the piazza and you can hear the bells in the morning. The rooms are huge even for American standards. There is art throughout the rooms and hotel and the breakfast is wonderful. The staff is very friendly and speak perfect English.

My husband and I will be there for three nights in May. It will be our first time there so I can't relay our experience, but we are staying at the B&B Michelangeli. It was recommened in the RS guidebook and is 75 euros including breakfast. Plus, it has a washing machine & kitchen. I plan on using some of my time there to catch up on laundry before heading to Rome! I would also recommend getting or borrowing the RS guidebook if you can as there are many good budget options listed. Others we looked at were B&B Valentina, B&B La magnolia, and Casa Selita B&B. Sorry I don't have first hand knowledge yet but hopefully this is helpful! Maybe we'll see you in Orvieto :-)

Orvieto would be a great choice. Several years ago I spent 3 nights at the Hotel Corso and liked the place. I liked Orvieto, but it closes at 9 p.m. Buon viaggio,

I am considering something similar. My question concerns transportation. There appears to be no extra charge for picking up a rental car (Hertz or Avis) in Siena and returning it to Orvieto. Consequently, my plan is to pick up a rental car in Siena, tour Tuscany for 3 days, return the rental car to Orvieto in the morning, spend the day in Orvieto, take a late afternoon train to Rome. Does that sound like a realistic plan, experts?

Martha, we absolutely LOVED Orvieto! We were there last May, and here are some of my photos and a couple of video clips of Orvieto, in case you're interested. For modest lodging, I can highly recommend B&B Garibaldi, run by David. One of the most helpful and friendly hosts we've ever had in Italy. Here's his website. He'll meet you at the train station and drive you up into the historic center of town (just a few minutes' drive).

We have stayed at Valentinas B and B and have nothing but good things to say about it. In fact we are staying there again with friends this April.

My wife and I also stayed at Valantina B&B last October. Very nice large rooms with en suite baths. About 60 euros. About two blocks away is restaurant numo uno. Funky kind of place with bi-wing model planes hanging from the ceiling. Lots of fun and excellant food. Price was moderate.

B&B Flavia is a good choice. They will pick you up and take you to the apartment. It is spacious and nice. Good price. The owner is very helpful also.
