Looking for farmhouse recommendations 5-8 km outside of city , and also with no car, will taxis pick up about farmhouses? As one did say "recommend a car".
I can’t imagine visiting Tuscany without a car especially if staying at an agriturismo outside of a city.
Is there some reason you don't want to rent a car? Cost? Heard horror stories? Driving in many parts of Italy is not that difficult. Just need to read up on basics like ZTL (no car entry zones) and parking.
Husband and I stayed in Orvieto without a car and wished we had rented one! Don't have direct experience driving in the Umbria region but would think it would fairly easy. Rented a car in Puglia and stayed on a farm. Having a car made the experience that much more enjoyable.
Consider staying in Orvieto proper (which is great) or rent a car if your heart is set on the farmhouse.
good luck!
What aspect of 'farmhouse' appeals to you? The word 'agriturismo' encompasses a range of accommodation that take advantage of special provisions in Italian law. Some are true farms, some are rural resorts with nary a chicken in sight. some are like inns with a few rural attractions like donkey rides.
Thanks for all your input, we have booked a B&B 10 min walk to funicular instead.
Staying in Orvieto, as you are, you don't need a car. If you want to visit the countryside, that is different, and you will need one.
Casa Selita B&B is a 'farmhouse' stay but a very short walk to the elevator up to town. From the train station, we took the town bus to the bottom of their driveway. Other options would be a taxi or for a small extra charge, arrange with the owner to pick you up at the station.
