Hi, was wondering if Orvieto would be a good daytrip from Rome. Thanks
Should be easy enough. Trains are frequent and less than an hour. Ron in Rome had a nice piece on Orivieto to get you thinking: http://www.roninrome.com/%20shopping-dining/orvieto-day-trip-from-rome.
It's an excellent day trip. I LOVE Orvieto.
very easy to reach... you could rent a car for a day and see other places besides orvietto... once you are there Todi is not far and it is cultural center of Umbria. cheers
Yes, Orvieto is a great day trip from Rome. We loved Orvieto and felt that it was definitely worth while. It's an interesting little town. Consider the underground tour if you go; it's only an hour long but very informative and fascinating. Have a great time.
Thanks everyone for the feedbacks. We'll make this a daytrip from Rome.
If you travel by train, just know that the funicular is right across the street from the train station, you can take that up to town. The Duomo (church) is beautiful. You should have time to visit St Patrick's Well, that's fun. The views of the countryside from the walls are worth several pictures. The ceramic shopping in Orvieto is great too. Enjoy. I've been 2x now, and would go back again for a nice day trip.
We love Orvieto and do it as an overnighter from Rome. Better hotel prices and a wonderful ambiance.
Great day trip from Rome. Very easy to get to using the train and it is only about an hour or so outside of Rome. Leave early to get a full day in Orvieto.
Orvieto is my favorite hilltown! Consider the train schedule that would permit you to enjoy dinner there, as well as lunch. The little bus that runs from the top of the funiculare in a loop is a cute intro and way to get oriented. I second the underground tour - it was worth it. You book it just across the street from the Cathedral. We have had very good luck with restaurants specializing in Umbrian cuisine in Orvieto, check the slow trav website for current recs. Orvieto has a very good local white wine that you can seek out. IMO, Orvieto is the best day trip choice out of Rome. Frequent 1-hour trains make it very accessible. Even the rapid Inter-City trains will often stop in Orvieto...
I think this is very manageable. A few years ago, my daughter and I headed to Orvieto immediately after our flight landed in Rome, to spend a day or two overcoming jet lag. The train takes about an hour, and Orvieto is a small town, so a day trip should be good. Enjoy!

Very reasonable. About a hour and a half train ride from from Florence or Rome. Do not take a car, Orvieto is built on a tufa and parking is almost non existent. You can enjoy wine, the Duomo, San Brizio is amazing. St. Patrick's well and the Underground tour is also very nice. If you want to spend the night THE VALENTINo is an awesome hotel.
This is not for the OP (who shall be traveling by train), but for whomever else might be interested in a day trip to Orvieto: On the contrary, Orvieto is one of the most accessible tufa hill towns to visit, arriving by CAR or train. There is a very large parking lot for visitors, easily accessible from the highway. It sits at the base of the hill, across from the train station. The funiculare is right there to take you to the town above... what couldn't be easier???
