Has anyone taken the train from Rome to Orvieto for a day trip? We will be in Rome for a week and have all the major sites covered including a day trip to Naples/Pompeii but was curious if we should travel to Orvieto as well? TIA
Yes, I have done this many times. It's an easy trip. I usually go in the morning, see the sights, have lunch, and return in the late afternoon. The Orvieto Cathedral (an hour-ish) is worth seeing and the views overlooking the countryside are lovely.
It is an easy trip by train, you can easily spend most of the day there, or just lunch and a few hours.
The direct Intercity train from Rome to Orvieto is a little faster and takes about 1:15 if the timing works for you.
The train station is in Orvieto Scalo (modern town) at the bottom of the hill and you take the funicular (opposite the train station) up the hill to the city itself. Don't be confused by the weird Trenitalia "city center" ticket that tries to combine the train with a bus into the city - taking the funicular is part of the experience and probably faster than trying to time the bus.
Orvieto is great little town with an oversized cathedral, an interesting well and cave structures but will mostly just be a charming respite from big city Rome with vast Umbrian views and a relaxed atmosphere.
If you're craving rolling green hills, personal space and some peace and quiet during your trip to Rome then it's a good way to spend a day.
Enjoy,

There are several worthwhile museums in Orvieto as well.
Be sure to read the previous threads discussing day trips to Orvieto- specifically about trains to and from
A forum search will bring them up
Orvieto is worth a few nights so yes a day trip is worthwhile
Check the schedule before you decide. This past year there have been less trains to Orvieto (IC). Also expect lots of day trippers and they come in droves. Orvieto is one of my favorite towns and I've been many times.
There seemed to be a lot of Italians in Orvieto when I was there over 10 days or so in 2015. Perhaps they were Romans on day trips. I wonder whether going on a weekday might mean fewer other visitors; unfortunately, I didn't pay attention to daily differences when I was in Orvieto.
