Orvieto...day trip from Rome?

I'm still looking for the something to do when we've had enough coffee and ruins. Would Orvieto feel like a "somewhere else"?...Not far via train?

Orvieto is definitely "somewhere else" as compared to Rome. It's a beautiful hill town.

Take the train from Termini direct (or via Tiburtina). The Intercity trains (direct from Termini)leave about every 2 hours, cost 10.60€ and take 58 minutes!

The Regionale trains leave about the same frequency - so you about have a train an hour - and take 1:18 from Termini (they go through Tiburtina so you can catch it there if convenient), and they cost 7.10€.

All prices are ONE-WAY 2nd class...

You were probably just making a little joke, but I hope you do realize that Rome is much, much more than just "coffee and ruins." It's a modern bustling city as well, with all that that has to offer. Also, check out some of the other neighborhoods, such as Trastevere, for a different experience without leaving the city. But, yes, I've had several friends tell me that Orvieto is a wonderful day trip that's not far via train.

We took the train (1 hour) to Orvieto and stayed the night. It is a wonderful little town. They have underground Etruscan ruins and great food. There is also wine to sample. Depending how much time you have in Rome, this is a great option.

Orvieto is one of my favorite hilltop towns. Small, but with lots of character. Great ceramic shopping, and a beautiful church, St Patrick's well, and great views from the city walls.

It is worth a day trip. My daughter and I did this last November as a break from the hussle and crowds of Rome.

Also, I suggest Ostia Antica. It's a simple Metro ticket ride. Cost is less than the train to Orvieto, and could be another day trip for you if you'd like.

Like Pompei, it's a good shape, and fun to walk around and discover the baths, Diana's Bar, the theater, etc.
Entree fee is not a lot, and you can spend a full day there. One hint. If you go, consider taking a picnic lunch. There is a place to eat, and the food is "ok", but it would be great to just find a spot, sit and eat and do a bit of people watching around the ruins!

Thank you all...I think that might give us a good change, getaway destination. Berlasconi won't have time to deal with the Naples garbage problem between now and May 3.
