I too enjoyed the Hotel Virgilio right by the Duomo in Orvieto. Comfortable but small rooms, great location, fine breakfast, nice helpful staff, affordable rates. But it is a simple place, no way 4 or 5 stars, if 5 stars means super-deluxe. It is maybe a very nice 2+ or 3, I think.

Larry is correct in that the hotel is not super-deluxe, but is rated 3 stars. Star system has less to do with luxury than with amenities like elevators, swimming pools, etc. The view of the Duomo from some rooms is worth a star or two to me. Anyway, it's a lovely place with a great location.

We've stayed at the Hotel Corso and can highly recommend it, as well. It is conveniently located, the property is well maintained, the staff is outstanding, and it met all of our needs.

Buon viaggio,

We stayed at La Magnolia. Great family owned B&B, walking distance to sights, the Cathedral, restaurants. Don't know about stars as we don't pay attention to them. You can check them out on booking.com or tripadvisor.

We stayed at Casa Selita on our honeymoon and it was a dream! Absolutely loved, loved, loved it. It is located outside of town, but it is worth the short, uphill walk, IMHO. We also reserved a wine tasting with Selita's husband, who was voted Italy's top sommelier some years ago. Very much worth it!

Will you have a rental car? If so, you're going to want a place with parking. (And as noted, stars in Italy don't correspond to quality; they correspond to amenities such as 24 hour front desk, lift, and parking.)

If you are looking for specific amenities, such as an elevator, terrace, or 24-hour reception, then you might be better off searching for those than for a star rating.
