Orvieto as a day trip from Florence?

I'm in the beginning stages of planning a trip centered around Florence next March. I have been to Orvieto as a day trip from Rome but my husband has not been there. I think I read that the train from Florence to Orvieto does not stop at the main train station at Florence and I'm also wondering if its a fast train like the ones we have taken in the past from Rome to Florence. I suspect Orvieto as a day trip from Florence is like Cinque Terra as a day trip from Florence-doable but is it enjoyable?

I am also planning to spend some nights in Bologna and do a day tour from there to Ravenna, which I have read is reasonable.

Thanks for y'all's input on our plans!

There are RV (regionale veloce, fast regional) trains doing Firenze SMN - Orvieto and vv. in 2 hours 15min; not reservable.
There are IC (intercity) trains, marginally faster, reservable, but only from Florence periferic stations (Rifredi and Campo di Marte).
Frecciarossa trains (very fast) do not call at Orvieto.
In some cases Orvieto can be reached by a combination of the Regionale trains.

I've done Firenze-Orvieto-Firenze a lot of times for work and it is an enjoyable trip; somewhat faster than going to Cinque Terre.

just took train Rome to orvieto and then Orvieto to florence (spent a few nights). it was painless though not a super fast ride. I think orvieto as a day trip actually probably easier than CT even if the travel times are the same, We day tripped (via bus to CT) from florence. So many more people in CT - I think you can cover more ground in orvieto, less crowded and more centralized. Start at the top (duomo) and work your way back down to the funicular.

My college age student did Ravenna with her school from florence. It was one of her favorite class trips...
