Looking for input on whether on our way to Rome this would be a good stop for a night - or two? Is there much to do and are there any nearby places for a quick day trip that doesn't involve a car (we could possibly get one for the day) or two or more hours on a train?
Orvieto is worth a night, I suppose two. There is an interesting church there, some Etruscan history, the town itself is charming, decent restaurants. Civita di Bagnoregio is the most common day trip from Orvieto, you can do by bus (to Lubriano then on to there by taxi) or taxi from Orvieto. Renting a car for the day is also an option, especially if you find someplace else you want to visit.
There is certainly enough to do for a day, to stop over night and enjoy a full day there.
Do the underground tour of ancient Orvieto . Walk down St Peter's well, roam the streets (great ceramic shopping) Enjoy the park and take a little picnic lunch there and relax. See the church shine in the light of the sun.
There are several good museums and the chapel at the cathedral for which there's an entry fee is a stunner. Orvueto has many worthwhile sights. The tourist office used to offer at least one walking tour.
