Orvieto: 5 days with Teens (Help with Itinerary, Please!)

Hi all,

Is 5 days too long to stay in Orvieto? We are arriving in Rome and will have a car. Our itinerary is as follows:

Day 1: Land in Rome, Travel to Orvieto -- Relax
Day 2: Explore Orvieto
Day 3: Civita di Bagroregio
Day 4: Day trip to Pisa (2.5 hour drive) -- been here before but on Kids' must do list... Maybe tackle on Cinque Terre to get there for the afternoon? (1.5 drive from Pisa)... Or not... LOL
Day 5: Day trip to Assisi -- first time here... Should we add another small town?
Day 6: Travel to Rome

I'm wondering if we should stay overnight in Assisi and from Assisi travel to Rome? Any thoughts on this?

Thank you for your help.

Our teens especially loved Florence, Siena, San Gimignano and Volterra.e were based in Panzano.

Nothing wrong with going to Pisa, but it is a bit far from Orvieto. Consider going to Perugia instead.

Thank you @Suki!!!
We have been to all of those places before, definitely agree with you though! My children have never been - and I would love to bring them- just not enough days this time around!!!!

Although Volterra may be worth going again.... I especially loved the eerie magical feeling of this town!!!

@Geovaggrifith,

Thanks- I know 2.5 hours a bit of a drive but it is on their must-see and this trip we are trying to include their interests too! I will look into Perugia though!

Although I hate 1-night stays, it might make sense to spend night 5 in Assisi and drive to Rome from there. Assisi is delightful in the evening after the day-trip crowds have left, and you could stop at a few small towns on your way there and/or on the way to Rome. Plus you may not want to make a long day trip to Assisi the day after your long day trip to Pisa. I think trying to add CT to Pisa would be too much. You could stop at another town between Orvieto and Pisa instead, or even in nearby Lucca and bicycle around the walls.

A full day allotted for Civita di Bagnoregio? Do you understand that it is a place where hardly anyone lives? I’ve read somewhere that there are 8 permanent residents. There’s nothing to do there.
i would give Orvieto 2 days, especially since your first is a get-over-jet-lag day. Plenty to see and do there.

5 hours of car travel in 1 day would be too much for me. If Pisa is a must, why not stay over 1 night? You could take in another town, like Lucca or Volterra.
I agree with Frank, above, that Assisi is a rather long distance for a day trip. Viamichelin gives the time as 1 hour, 26 minutes. Following the rule of thumb to add 25% to their estimates, that gives close to 2 hours. I would stay over the night before traveling to Rome.

@Rosalyn
Thanks for the suggestion. Yes I am fully aware CB is almost uninhabited... it’s slotted for a day but that doesn’t mean we stay there for the entire day. Just gives us some flexibility - to return and relax, or take in another town.

I’ll have to rejigger the dates. I agree not to have 2 back-to-back long days!

Driving to Pisa may be a 2.5 hr drive on paper, but consider traffic, getting lost, stops for food or bathroom with kids, etc. So that is 5+ hours to and back. Absolutely forget Cinque Terre! You will not have any time to enjoy it, and you cannot drive in Cinque Terre, you have to find parking .

Why are you staying so long in Orvieto? I love the town, but 2-3 nights is fine. For kids, see the Etruscan tombs. I would suggest skipping Pisa, so far, (this time) since you have a car, go to Assisi or Perugia for 2 nights. Drive around Umbria, see Spello and Montefalco. Return car in Orvieto and train to Rome.

If your kids are into outdoorsy things, there is Lake Trasimeno, about an hour away.
