You might want to get a map and see what the surrounding towns are. Orvieto's in a central location--right on a controlled access road that can get you all over the region fast.

The incredible Civita de Bagnoregio is to the southwest of the city. Peruglia is not far, and even Siena is maybe 90 minutes northeast. There are many other villages and towns throughout the region.

What's nice is that the Hertz rental office is across the parking lot at the train station. It's a 70 minute ride into Rome Termini and a great place to pickup and turn in a rental car. Renting a car is the easiest way to see so much more. The roads in the area ara well marked and well paved. They're just a little crooked.

Hi Kay, I've just done some research on day trips from Orvieto; since I'll be staying there for three days in July. A few towns that I've read that may be worth a visit are Pitigliano (about 1 hr west, by car,) Todi (47 min northeast) and Amelia (53 mine southeast.) Rome can also be reached in about 1 1/2 hr by train. Maybe someone else can comment on any of the first three suggestions, since I've never been to them.

If you have a car you might consider visiting the cascate marmore. It’s a series of waterfalls that were created artificially by the Romans. The falls turn on and off at specific times of the day. Quite an interesting phenomenon. You can walk up or down on pathways quite near the falls. If I recall correctly there was also a former Roman settlement nearby that we visited as part of our trip from Orvieto.

How many nights in Orvieto?

Here's where we enjoyed eating in Orvieto last November: Il Malandrino Bistrot, Trattoria La Palomba, La Pergola, and especially Il Labirinto.

Day trips:

Tarquinia and its necropolis (great frescoes in the tombs) and Etruscan museum is an hour and 20 minutes by car. Could stop in Tuscania on the way.

Amelia and nearby Narni are both nice towns. Our favorite place to eat in Narni was Gastronomia Terra & Arte.

We haven't been to Pitigliano, but plan to stay there for 3 nights this fall (chosen after a LOT of research!).

The very strange garden of monsters at Bomarzo is 40 minutes away by car.
