Ortisei to Lienz without a car

Any ideas on the best way to get from Ortisei, Italy to Lienz, Austria without a car?

Previously we were going to take the train from Bolzano to Lienz, (bus from Ortisei to Bolzano) but we don't want to backtrack. Could we take a bus from Ortisei to either Brixen or Fortezza and then board the train to Lienz?

I think the following bus schedule tells me there's only two times to travel from Ortisei to Bressanone (Brixen) by bus, 7:34am and 1:34pm and that it is about an hour travel time.

Bus schedule: http://www.valgardena.it/dl/stchristina/pdf/351_11122016_09122017.pdf

So if we catch the 7:34 am train, we can get on a train at 9:30ish in Brixen departing for Lienz.

Do I have it right? I know I'll have to verify dates/times as I get closer, but just trying to figure out a little bit better plan.

Thank you!

What is your travel date? I see many options for a weekday in July. About every hour in the morning until 9:34, then early afternoon. I'm using the route planner at the Suedtirol Mobil site, which is very good and very official. Bus to Klausen/Chiusa, then trains to Lienz.

If you want a scenic tour of the Dolomites including a trip over the Groednerjoch (Passo Gardena), take a bus to Corvara-in-Badia Busbahnhof, then switch to a bus to Sankt Lorenzen (San Lorenzo) and pick up the train to Lienz there. If it is a nice day, take the extra time.

Hi (again!) Sam,

My travel day is Wednesday 9/20/2017.

Here's what I'm thinking:

Wed 9/20 - wake up in Ortisei
-Bus to Brixen (59 min, 7:34am bus)
-Train to Lienz (2hr 34 min, 9:35am train)
-Lunch in Lienz
-Rent Car around 1:30pm
-Drive to Heilligenblut (1hr)

My suggestion:
8:06 bus to Corvara arrive 9:30
9:47 bus to Sankt Lorenzen arrive 10:45
11:22 train to Lienz arrive 13:09

Of course you can take one of these buses while you are in Ortisei to visit the Passo Gardena for some hiking.

Hi Sam,

I wanted to thank you again for this good advice. I'm down to finalizing all the details.

I was hoping you might know if I can buy the train ticket from Sankt Lorenzen to Lienz online? It's listed as RegionalExpress, and I understood regional tickets had to be purchased in country. But this one crosses the border, so I thought it might be an exception.

I assume if I have to buy in country, I could do so several days earlier at the Bolzano station? I'd hate to go to all the effort of getting there at a specific time to meet a train I may not be able to purchase a ticket for.

Thanks!

Melissa
