Ortesi to Lakes are to Milan - Please critique itinerary

We have decided on Northern Italy vs Southern Italy for two weeks in early October. Based on info in this forum and looking at average weather temps for the last few yrs, this suits us better for outdoor activities.

Sept 30- Arrive Milan- train and bus to Ortesi. From what I've had time to research so far, this is how to get there.

Sept 30 to Oct.3 Hotel Stetteneck. Can add or shave a day.

Oct 4-7 Lakes Area. Welcome suggestions on best area to stay for first timers

Oct 8-11 Milan. Welcome suggestions on best area to stay for first timers.

We do not plan on renting a car but are not averse to doing so.

Thank you .

the name of the city is ORTISEI, please correct spelling if you want to look for proper public transportation.
The train from Milan will go to Bolzano (a train change is required at Verona), then from Bolzano you need the bus to Ortisei.

You should decide which lake you want. If you were driving, I'd suggest Lake Garda, which is along the way between Ortisei and Milan. Without a car lake Como is also doable (need to go back to Milan then a train to Varenna). If you decide to visit a lake just before flying out back to the US from Milan Malpensa MXP (or upon arrival) then Lake Maggiore is also doable.

Milan: I'm not a fan of Milan, so I rarely stay over one night, but if you like to stay longer I suggest the area near the Duomo, or just north of the Duomo (Quadrilatero della Moda, or Fashion District). It's also safe. To go to the airport the fastest way from there is by taking the Malpensa Express train from the CADORNA station.

For the type of trip you are envisioning I'd probably rent a car in Milan (maybe at the airport or after you visit the City upon arrival) then visit the Dolomites by car and later drive to a lake (you can also drive the Stelvio pass from the Dolomites to lake Como). From the lake I would go to the airport the day before my flight back, unless you decide to leave visiting Milan for last, in which case you'd return the car to the city (or to nearby Linate airport) on the day you arrive to Milan from the lake (don't have a car while visiting Milan, it would be a waste since it would need to be parked the whole time at the hotel garage, due to traffic restrictions).

Thank you. We thought it might be best to go to the Dolomites first as early in the month we might have better weather. The way we have the itinerary planned that would put us in the Lakes area on the weekend which might mean alot of traffic?, so thought it best to go to an area which doesn't require a car. Also doing Milan at the end puts us where we need to be for our flight home. Any thoughts?

Any choice is fine. A car would be useful at the Dolomites. You can also rent it in Verona or Bolzano to minimize driving while jet lagged. If you go to Lake Como, you can easily do without a car. At Lake Garda or Lake Maggiore a car could have some benefit, although you can just as easily do without. For sure you want to make sure you don’t have a rental car while in Milan, because a rental car in Milan is totally useless. It would be like having a rental car to visit Manhattan: a very expensive poor choice.
