Oriveto,Pisa,Asissi

We would like to go to Oriveto, Pisa and Assisi, all in the same day, with our base as Florence. Is this possible? Are there any tours that take you on a day trip to all three places? We leave this weekend for Italy.

Not realistic, in my opinion. To go from Florence to Pisa to Orvieto to Assisi and back to Florence would be at least eight hours of travel without ever stopping. Orvieto alone would be a long day-trip from Florence, Pisa a little less so. Assisi is somewhat less accessible, about 2-1/2 hours by train from Florence, then figure at least half an hour to get up the hill from the train station at Santa Maria degli Angeli. Assisi is worth a trip, definitely, but it deserves at least an overnight.

Orvieto's 2 hrs. south of Florence on controlled access toll road, and its well worth seeing. Assisi is just north and east of there. Try to visit them both in one day and Assisi might just be a drive through.

Pisa is 1 hr. by train west of Florence, and it's easiest reached by a train. Other than the tower, there's not that much there other than the dominant airport in the area. Pisa would be worthwhile if you were also going to to visit Lucca--in the same area.

Thank you for your suggestions, David and Jeff! They seem logical! Do either of you have any advice on which guided tours could take us from Florence to ......... and from Rome to

We are trying Viator next year. Here's a link to their day tours out of Florence:
And as Roberto mentioned, the towns you want to visit are in opposite directions. You are looking for Pisa one day (which you could do on your own, easy train ride, 20 min walk from the station to the tower)

Assisi is a good 4 hours by train, with a transfer. Signing up for a tour with a guide, on a bus sounds like a good idea.

More information as to how much time you have free in Florence, Rome, or elsewhere to make these trips.
Pisa is an easy day (or even half day) from Florence.
Orvieto and Assisi are really best as overnight stops between Rome and Florence.
Rome >> Orvieto >> Assisi >> Florence

I'm not sure if there is a train from Florence, but it is worth taking a day to see Gubbio in Umbria.

What is the city closest to the Umbria area and Assisi?

Perugia is the capital of Umbria. It is only about 16 miles from Assisi but it takes about 40 minutes by car. The train station that serves Assisi is in the town of Santa Maria degli Angeli, in the valley about four miles below Assisi. Busses run frequently from Santa Maria degli Angeli to Assisi.

As I recall, there is no train to Gubbio. Buses go there, but timing can make it a difficult daytrip. Without a car, Perugia is a good base for Umbria because it is a regional transportation hub (trains and buses).
