Order of Itinerary and Departing Airport

We have established our major areas for a two-week trip in early May. Venice, Florence, Sorrento/Pompei/Amalfi, Rome. We had originally decided on this order, flying into Venice then departing from Rome (returning home to Houston). I had a recent conversation with a classmate who is a pilot for a major US airline and flies internationally. He suggested putting Sorrento/Pompei/Amalfi as our last area and flying home from Naples. He said he liked the size of the Naples airport and that we could get a flight to Frankfurt then a direct flight home to Houston. Any advice on this suggestion versus our initial plan?

Either works
You will probably need to spend night before departure in Naples

I agree with your classmate. Naples is a comfortable airport, Rome is a megalopolis.

You can leave Rome for last and fly home from Rome or leave Naples for last and fly home from Naples.
Obviously you need to spend at least the last night in the city you depart from.
Houston is a United hub however neither Rome nor Naples has non stop flights to Houston, so you will need a layover somewhere. United flies to both but not from Houston non stop (only from Newark to Naples). But Lufthansa (and Swiss, which is owned by Lufthansa) is a United partner so you could also consider them.
