Order of interest, Siena, Perugia, Orvieto, Assisi

While we have traveled in Europe a good bit, this is our first trip to Italy. This is primarily a photography trip, with a concentration on ancient structures, cathedrals, castles, quaint smaller towns (smaller than Florence anyway), and walking ancient streets and alleys. We also like small, quirky hotels.

Having said that, the above four towns are on the short list. The plan is to fly into Venice, go to Florence, go to Pisa, got to Cinque Terre, and then go through three of the listed four before visiting Rome.

Any thoughts on which to leave out would be appreciated. As far as that goes, any advice of any sort wold be useful. Talk to me like I'm 4 years old and I'll do better :)

You do not say the time of year or length of your trip however... I would start in Venice then Florence. From Florence take a train to Siena then rent a car and see Tuscany and/or Assisi. Drop the car in Orvieto and take a train into Rome. I have never had an interest in the C.T. or Pisa and Assisi is a longer trip. Hopefully you have at least 17 days on the ground.

Planning way in advance. We're looking at 19 days to three weeks from probably April 28th, 2019. For personal reasons renting a car is a non starter.

BJ,
I loved visiting Siena, Orvieto and Assisi last October.
You can easily travel to all of these beautiful cities via train.
Do consider staying in Lucca instead of Pisa.

This is the route I took; Lucca => Siena => Orvieto => Assisi => Rome.

I don't know how many days you plan to stay in each place, but you may want to consider visiting San Gimignano (via bus from Siena), and Spello, via bus from Assisi.

Enjoy your trip!

This is like asking which of your 4 kids you prefer or you don’t like as much. :-)
Ok if I have to put an order of preference based on my taste(which are similar to what you wrote):
Siena: lots of history there, it’s also much bigger then Assisi and Orvieto. Charming streets, piazza del campo is certainly one of the most beautiful piazza in Europe. Climb the palazzo republico for spectacular views of the piazza del campo and the whole region. See the museum inside as well. Lots of history there, The duomo is incredible, it’s museum and you can also go up outside for a different view.
Assisi: small but incredibly charming
Orvieto: the main attraction is the cathedral, but it’s a spectacular one. I’ve seen a lot of cathedrals in Europe, this one is something.
Perugia: the piazza IV november is very photogenic, but I don’t think there is as many remarkable sites in Perugia as there is in Siena. At least, this is the feeling I had. Yet it is nice

We went twice to both Sie

I'd drop Perugia. The other three are more charming and less citified.

It is not a reason not to go there, but Siena is much larger than the other three. I would allow more time, even two nights in Siena. It could be said to be "different" because it was (for economic and political reasons) the last place in the area for the Renaissance to arrive. All of Tuscany is hot and crowded in high season. For that reason, a combined-attraction ticket is almost a must to see the interior of places like the Siena Cathedral.

Drop Perugia. Also, check out Calendimaggio in Assisi if you want outstanding photo ops. In 2019 I think it should be May 3-5.
