My wife and I used frequent flier miles for our trip to Italy this summer. Because of that we have to fly into Milan and then out of Paris. We have 10 days and would like to visit the follwing cities, Venice 2 days, Florence 2 days, Cinque Terre 2 days and Rome 3 days. We are trying to figure out the most appropriate route. Any suggestions would be appreciated?
Your itinerary sounds a bit ambitious. If I'm reading it correctly, you'll be spending two days/one night per town. That means that you are either coming or going every day. That's a lot of travel time (especially since your chosen towns are at least two hours apart), which doesn't leave much time to sightsee, etc.
DW makes an excellent point. From Milan, you collect your luggage, then it's an hour or more by bus to the Milan train station, then a 2.5 hour train ride to Venice. What with connection times, that's 1/2 a day gone. And each of your transfers will eat up close to 1/2 day, when you add packing, checking in/out of hotels, getting to/from train stations, especially CT. If you are really set on CT, I'd drop either Venice (noooo, it's my favorite) or Rome (that's another toughie to miss, also it is a relatively short train ride from Florence). So my recommendation is to skip the CT. There is so much to see in each of your other cities. You could also add one or more of these:
Verona - it's on the way from Milan to Venice. Stop for the day, leaving your luggage at the train station.
Padua - it's on the way from Venice to Florence. Stop for the day, leaving your luggage at the train station.
Siena - it's an easy day trip from Florence, if you extend your stay there.
Hi Jason. I agree with the others...your itinerary is too ambitious & does not take into consideration the travel time between places. Consider cutting 1 of the places so you won't frantically be changing locations every 1-2 days. Many people underestimate the time that this takes, not to mention it's very tiring! Have a wonderful time in Italy!
