Order of Amalfi Coast trip

Hi all!

We are going to be in the Naples/Amalfi Coast region in June of 2025 for 7 nights and I'm trying to figure out the best order for our trip. This will be at the beginning of the trip so we will be flying in from the US for our 7 nights (might add an 8th night on arrival to allow for getting situated in the area). After this portion of the trip we head to Tuscany.

We're aiming for 4 nights in Sorrento and then 3 nights on the Amalfi Coast (location TBD). Not sure if we do Sorrento first and then AC 2nd or vice versa? Thoughts for each location are Sorrento (in no particular order): Day 1-Capri. Day 2-Pompeii/Vesuvius. Day 3-Naples (thinking Archaeological Museum as one option). For Amalfi, thinking day trips to some of the towns along the coast including transit via the water.

Thinking the Sorrento leg will be busier and do we want to do that on arrival, or ease into things with a bit more down time on the AC? Thinking if we do AC second though, it might be easier to head north via Salerno as opposed to the trek from Sorrento to Naples?

Thanks for the feedback on options! :-)

Where are you flying into and out of?

Still undecided on flight in. I’ve seen lots of posts flying into Rome but maybe see if we can connect into Naples.

After this segment head up to Tuscany for a week.

One thing I'd consider is the length of time it will take to get to the Amalfi Coast. We stayed in Sorrento and that was a long day after an overnight flight to Rome. The Amalfi Coast will take even longer. For that reason I'd start in Sorrento.

We did
Sorrento 4
Amalfi 3
Salerno 2

Then headed north-very easy from Salerno

If you can fly in to Naples there is a bus from airport to Sorrento

Try to give Salerno a night so you can visit Paestum

Thanks all for the feedback. Think we'll aim for Sorrento first then. Assuming after staying in AC area on 2nd half of the week will make getting to Tuscany a bit easier transiting through Salerno?

Yes Jed, I found taking an early ferry from Amalfi to Salerno’s train to be super easy and the services were on schedule. The train station is a comfortable walk from the dock. Sorrento makes a fine base and starting point after a long journey. Splitting the week up between here and the AC is the right thing to do.

Also, if you’re packing relatively light, Capri can be done as a stopover from Sorrento to the AC. Rick’s guidebook outlines this, but it’s straightforward. Get the early ferry (regardless) and there’s a local business at the port that can check your bags for the day. If all you had in mind was a day trip anyway, it’s very efficient and worthwhile. If you do this, you might want to flip another night to the AC.

Thanks! Great idea on the day trip to Capri. Will keep that in mind. I just think spending the 3 nights on the AC will make it much easier to visit some of the towns and avoid a lot of the traffic. I'm sure I'll need to be strategic about how and when to visit, but thankfully my wife and I like to get up early, so that will help A LOT! :-)
