Orange House in Varenna

I have read the reviews on Trip Advisor, but would like to hear from anyone who has personally stayed at the Orange House and what you thought. We are on a budget and even though this place wouldn't be my first choice, if it is decent I won't mind staying there. Thanks.

Hello Andrea, We stayed at Orange House in Varenna in Sept./07 Very conveniently located on the road just below the train station. You can see the lake from the B&B and walk just minutes to the lakeshore and the ferry dock.. Our hosts were very gracious and Mr. even approached each traveller as they reached his street corner inquiring if they were the guests expected. Our room was modern, spacious and simply furnished (as per Italian standards) with a good sized bathroom. Our breakfast was generous with yoghurt, juice, savoury and sweet baked goods and a pot of coffee. We enjoyed our stay there and hopefully will return to Lago de Como soon.

We were at the Orange House for three nights in 2008 and had a great visit. There are only two rooms - the room downstairs has its own bathroom just outside the room and the larger room upstairs has an ensuite bathroom (our room). The living area upstairs is the shared space where breakfast is served. Mara and Piero, the owners, live elsewhere but come to prepare breakfast and are very helpful with restaurant recommendations and such. Our room was very clean and comfortable. There isn't a view of the lake, but the location is right down the street as you exit the train station. From there, the lake is a little further down the street and is close to the ferries. As we wandered around Varenna, we would run into Piero who would always stop and chat with us...a local friend! It's a great choice!

Thank you Sherry and Char for your first hand accounts of staying there. I think I will book it today!

You're welcome Andrea. Enjoy Varenna. A shopping note for "packing light" travelers. The region is known for making silk and the scarves/shawls in Bellagio are very beautiful, light and easy to fit into your luggage. No breakage either. I purchased two scarves and wished I had bought more. Thank you Char for naming the owners of Orange House. I had forgotten their names and will record them with my Varenna mementos. Sherry

Thanks Tim. As I said in my original post, I had read the reviews on trip advisor. I was looking for the opinion of people who frequent this board.

You're welcome, Andrea! Actually...one of the reviews on TripAdvisor is mine...I really loved the Orange House. Mainly because of the owners! Sherry, didn't you think they couldn't have been any nicer?
