Options upon arriving in Tirano late afternoon

Hi,

We’re booked on the Bernini Express ending in Tirano. We figure we’ll arrive late afternoon. We start in Chur and we’ll stop briefly along the way. So should we stay overnight in Tirano? Any place close by that you’d recommend for an overnight stay that might be more interesting? From there we’re deciding between Milan and Bologna. We have 2 more nights free before our reservation in Siena. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks!

We did the Bernina Express a few years ago. It was a quick train ride to Varenna on Lake Como where we stayed three nights.

Thanks. I heard the lakes area is somewhat closed down in December but I’ll take another look. Thanks again!

We start in Chur and we’ll stop briefly along the way.

The Bernina Express from Chur is a though train to Tirano, arriving at 12:49 pm. If you stop over briefly anywhere along the way, you will have to proceed by regular train to Tirano.

There are trains to Milan every hour at 8 past the hour until 8:08 pm from Tirano. Might as well head to Milan. If you want to go on to Bologna, you can do that the next day.

There was a brief stop somewhere on the Bernina Express if that's what you are thinking of.

I didn't see that you were visiting in December. Nope, I wouldn't go to Lake Como. Typically, you'll do better in bigger cities in the winter when weather is a bit iffy.

to elaborate on the prior answer - the fancy Bernina Express train is reservation required for the fancy seats. If you get off you can't just pop back on.

You can do all of the route, or any parts, by regional trains which ply the route hourly, or any part. They don't need or accept reservations so perfectly fit with whimsy. On the other hand, the sun will be very low in December if there is sun, and in the south, so a lot of things will be in shade. The days are short too.
