My mom and I will be in Sorrento for 3 days before heading about an hour away toward Tramonti. We’ll leave our luggage at our hotel in Sorrento and will have the morning until early afternoon for exploring. Does anyone have recommendations? Capri is the obvious choice, and I’m considering it, but a tourist trap is not ideal. Thank you!
Pompeii or Naples or ferry along AC (depends when this trip is)
Or just wander around Sorrento
Capri is full of tourists but I wouldn’t call it a tourist trap
Have you figured out how you will get to Tramonti?
Thank you! I should have noted we will have done Pompei and Naples. We’re hiring a taxi to get to Tramonti.
You’ll have done Pompeii but how about Herculaneum? It’s really good, quite different from Pompeii, and not as large a site so you could do it in the time you have. I’ve been to Capri and liked it, but that was many years ago in the winter so it wasn’t crowded then. I wouldn’t suggest going there unless you have a full day for the excursion.
About 15-20 minutes from Sorrento is the little town of Massa Lubrense. We did an agricultural tour there - a family farm where they have lemon and olive groves, herb and vegetable gardens, and small livestock. The son shows visitors around (small groups, like ten people) and at the end of the tour, the Mama serves an alfresco meal with all foods grown on the farm, including homemade limoncello.
I did this tour a couple of years ago and loved it. Then my son and his family went there last year and loved it too. (My teenage granddaughters said it was a highlight of their trip to Italy!).
If you are staying in Sorrento, they send a bus to pick you up so you don't have to arrange your own transportation.
(PS...I consider Capri a total tourist trap. I've been twice and that was about 1-1/2 times too many for me!)
If you haven't done the Archeological Museum in Naples, that would be a nice half-day. Circumvesuviana to the Naples Centrale station, taxi to the museum.
