Opinions please-stop between Florence and Rome

Hi!

Looking for opinions on staying an additional night in Florence (would be total of 4) or doing 3 and then spending 1 night in a place like Orvieto before heading on to Rome?

is it easy to get to Orvieto by train from Florence and is it a city that is convenient without a car?

any other recommendations greatly appreciated for a picturesque slow overnight stop between Florence and Rome

Thank you!

There are direct trains from Florence (both Rifredi and S.M.N. statins) to Orvieto taking 2 hours. And direct trains from Orvieto to Rome. The small city is very compact and walkable.

I would spend a night in Orvieto. On our RS tour we enjoyed our stay there at Grand Hotel Italia.

Orvieto is a very attractive place for an overnight, but it is crowded in the summer. Are you flying out the next day before 6PM from FCO? That is not a trivial detail. How much would it cost you to miss the plane?

Flying into Venice and staying for few nights....then heading to Florence.for a few nights...from Florence heading to Rome and flying back to NY from Rome for a few nights.... Traveling in September. Considering a stop between Florence and Rome for a more relaxing stay.
