Opinions about Rome’s hop on hop off buses?

A dear friend who’s been to Rome many times feels very strongly that I should take a HOHO bus tour upon my arrival. (Note: I can’t walk for long distances.) However, my research indicates that people are very disappointed, and that it’s not worth the money or the time. Can I hear from my fellow travelers? And if you do feel positive about it, please tell me which company you prefer. Grazie Mille!

What do you hope to accomplish with the HOHO bus? In my opinion, they are a great way to see everything in a city, and then decide later what you want to visit. If you are taking the HOHO to get a good guided tour, then no, you don't want to do that. If you just want to orient yourself, I think they are useful.

I have not done HOHO in Rome- but Rome just does not lend itself well to a HOHO bus. Many of the sights are in pedestrian only areas so you won't really be riding past many of them- you will still have to get out and walk a bit.
(ex: Pantheon, Trevi, Spanish steps, P Navonna, Campo
DeFiori etc all in pedestrian zones)
Rome is actually very walkable and the historical center is compact- the Vatican is a bit out of the way- take a cab
and the colosseum area is a tiny bit further as well but still within easy walking distance of the center. It's also mostly flat- some slight inclines here and there.
A HOHO in bus in Rome will likely spend most of its time stuck in traffic.

If you stay close to the Pantheon- dead center Rome-you are within 15-30 min walk to almost all sights.
