For those that have visited/live in Sicily and have visited/live in the US. Which state would you most compare to Sicily as far as climate/terrain? Especially in the summer months and most especially the western half of Sicily. Thanks for any input. Ron
Visited western Sicily at the end of May last year for a whole week. We were in the inland area east of Trapani and day tripped to the coast to San Vito lo Capo, to Favignana island, to Palerno, hiked at the Riserva dello Zingaro and visited the temples at Segesta and Selinunte near Mazara del Vallo. I would definitely agree and say the climate was very like California - I've lived both in northern, southern and inland southern California (Imperial valley) so I can tell you the days were beautiful and cool with a breeze but don't be fooled - wear lots of sunscreen because those rays were definitely not feeling hot there and then, but we paid for it with burned shoulders and faces the last two days we were there. There were lots of vineyards around Marsala, long stretches of open land, rocky cliffs along the coast as well as sandy beaches. Lots of everything. It was beautiful, some parts very wild and overall got the sensation that tourism sector isn't highly developed. Even with a GPS, got lost in Trapani several times and the drivers there were wild. Otherwise driving elsewhere was definitely easy. Palermo was an interesting experience, can't say I loved it but definitely interesting.
Northern California. Inland it is hot in summer; at the coast it is cool because the Pacific Ocean is cold. I saw parts of inland Sicily that reminded me of the Napa Valley and Sonoma County. California has rocky cliffs along parts of the coast similar to those I saw in Western Sicily.
