Opinion on Non-Stop Flight or Flight with Layovers?

We are buying our tickets on June 11th and am debating on the non-stop from Philly to Rome, Venice to Philly for about $1750.00 roundtrip for the both of us or save a couple hundred (around $1450) and go with flights that have layovers. I am worried about lost luggage and dealing with switching plans, etc...we will be checking one bag and have two carry-on's. Anyone's opinions if it's worth the money to pay for the non-stop or if the flights with lay-overs are worth the savings would be very much appreciated! My last two trips to Europe have been on non-stop flights...

Thanks!

If we could we would do the non-stop every time. But for now there is no non-stop from Denver.

Thank you both. Steve, your funny!

Steve, how has your experience been with switching to your connector flight in another Country besides the one your going to? I'm nervous about that, another language I don't speak, not getting on the plane in time, etc... Also, if your coming in on a connector, do you have an idea on how the seating works? Is it pick what's left or am I able to pre-pick seats?

All things being equal direct is a ton better.

Think of how much fresher you will be when you land because you didn't have to get out and wait for your next plane mid trip. Instead you can eat a light supper then try to sleep the rest of the way.

Only you can decide how much the added convenience of a non-stop is worth. It sounds like you are paying $75 extra each leg per ticket. For me that's worth saving a few hours of the most unpleasant part of the trip and adding that time to the good part of your trip.

The only time I've not had my luggage arrive with me was due to a connection. I made it - the luggage didn't. That was in Chicago.

I've connected in many US eastern cities, Dallas/Ft Worth and LA for various destinations. I've connected in Munich, Bankock, and San Jose, CR. Never had any problems at all with luggage.

I'd still opt for the non-stop if I could!

Unless the money is a serious issue, take the non-stop. The flight and total travel time will be less. It will be less of a toll on you physically and mentally. And less stress having to worry about baggage and making connections.

But if you have to change, the smaller the airport, the better.

Non-stop! Almost always worth it. I can't imagine having tacked unnecessary stops onto that flight....

Non stop espec now with the Iceland volcano eruption delays from time to time.
