We will be in Venice mid July and will spend a day in Verona. Would love to hear an opera in Verona but in checking the website it appears the operas start at 9:15 at night. I imagine it would not end until around 11 or later so taking the train back to Venice might not be so doable. Any thoughts out there? Would it just be better to stay overnight in Verona and unfortunately double up on our hotels and return to Venice in the morning?
They'll go until well after midnight. It would be much better to stay overnight in Verona, but be warned - the hotels there know it and increase their prices on opera nights. Good luck.
Unfortunately, I believe the last train to Venice from Verona leaves around 10:47 pm. So it is unlikely that you could make it to the station in time. You could always take in an opera at La Fenice in Venice. There are a couple of productions in July. http://www.teatrolafenice.it/cartellone_stagione.php?tipo=49
