I will be in Rome for 10 days and would love to see an opera (possibly outdoors?) Is this possible>
There is a summer season of Opera Roma at the Baths of Caracalla http://en.operaroma.it/il_teatro/strutture/terme_di_caracalla. Various performances from now through early August. Another classical option outdoors is Teatro Marcello http://www.classictic.com/en/Teatro-di-Marcello-Roman-Nights/10085/139300. It is everu night at 20:30 until early October. Enjoy!
It would depend on the opera schedule and when you'll be there. Try this site http://www.operaroma.it/en/ and this site http://www.classictic.com/en/Special/Rome-Opera Julie
Wow, thanks Laurel. I have been considering an opera or classical concert in Rome for my upcoming trip in September and apparently La Traviata is being performed in Chiesa de S.Paolo. Is this a nice venue? Sure looks great.
Linda, I believe that would be the Chiesa di Santo Paolo entro le Mura, which is an Anglican Church on the Via Nazionale. The groups that they bring in to perform there are of varying quality. I went to see a performance of the Messiah there once where the singers were quite good but it seemed as if many of the instrumentalists were seeing the notes for the first time. Being on the Via Nazionale, there is also noise that comes in from outside. I will never forget, right before the final "Halleeeeeeeeee-lu-jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahh!!!", there is a pause in the score, and during that precise moment one of the loud, annoying ambulances here drove by outside, and it was so well-timed that it caused people to snicker and chuckle, and really, in any case, totally distracted from the beauty of the music. So the basic answer on San Paolo is: Your Mileage May Vary. It depends very much upon which group they have coming in, what the traffic outside is doing, etc.
Bryan, good to know about outside interference. Thanks for the heads up. The opera is a 'maybe' for me. The following morning I am off to Sorrento so, we'll see. Ciao!
