Opera in Milan

My father and I will be spending our last night of a European Vacation in Milan. I would like to book Opera tickets for July 11, however, when I try to do this on the La Scala website it appears they are sold out. Any tips or alternative booking suggestions?

Opera is serious business in Milano.

An American diva went to Milan and sang her Aria at La Scala. When it was over, the audience rose as one and said "Again! Again!". She bowed and sang it once more.

Once more the audience rose and said "Again! Again!". She bowed again and sang it a third time.

Even then the audience rose and said "Again! Again!" but she politely declined saying she could not do it.

Then from the back, a typical Milano opera aficionado stood up and yelled "You do it again and again until you get it right".

That's Milano.

It would not be surprising if La Scala is sold out for July. Here's what they used to do, I don't know whether this is still how they do it: any remaining "day of" tickets are sold at noon on the day of the performance at the main box office. There used to be another ticket office at the Duomo Metro station. I've heard that "day of" tickets can also be bought on the Internet up to an hour or two before show time.
