Opera in Florence - questions for anybody that has attended one

We love opera (most of the opera's we've seen were the Met Opera's in the movie theaters or on PBS). I discovered two venues in Florence that sound very interesting - small and intimate, and not overly expensive. One is St Mark's English Church and the other is Teatro Auditorium al Duomo. Has anybody attended either opera house? St Mark's has the most operas, but it looks like the pillars in the church will block views. Do we need advance tickets? What is the dress attire? We were planning to travel in jeans and are wondering if we need to bring dress clothes. Thanks!

I would not wear jeans to an opera. Dress clothes would be appropriate.

Neither are in an actual Opera House. One's a church and the other is an auditorium - I don't think you need to dress "up" for either. Nice jeans with nice tops would probably be fine.

It always appropriate to dress well at the opera. Jeans are for the fields in Italy but, then again not even Italian farmers wear jeans.

Jeans are widely worn throughout Europe by locals. That said, it never hurts to have one nicer pair of pants, a skirt or dress in case something comes up that you need to dress a little nicer for. Even nice black jeans would work.

We attended the opera (La Traviata) in Florence in October, both of us wearing black jeans and a nice dress shirt blouse for my wife with a scarf. I never take a tie. We were surrounded by others mostly in jeans and some in dressier attire. We almost always go with black jeans. You will not be looked at twice.

Last March we went to an opera at St. Mark's English Church. We had reserved tickets and they were waiting for us at the door. We paid for them at the door They only had a limited number of people so all seats were good. We got senior rates so it wasn't expensive. We enjoyed it very much. Casual clothes would be fine. Just put on a scarf!!
